Boosted by a solid start by US markets, Dublin's ISEQ climbed off earlier lows to close marginally lower, even as Elan shares dropped as Royalty Pharma's bid seemed to be under threat.
US markets got a boost from better-than-expected retail sales and jobless claims reports.
The ISEQ ended the day down 0.18 per cent at 3,873.56 points.
