European stocks advanced as Alcoa Inc began the US earnings season by posting sales that beat estimates and investors awaited German industrial-output data.

Dublin’s ISEQ index failed to follow the trend but was largely unchanged, down just 0.04 per cent a short time. Smurfit Kappa fell 6.1 per cent, following a strong surge in its share price late in the day yesterday.
