The government is to announce a major shake-up in medical education this week, including plans to more than double the annual intake of medical students from Ireland and EU countries.

The rules for the entry of students into the country’s medical schools will be radically changed to include a range of aptitude tests and other criteria in addition to Leaving Certificate points.
