No issue has received more attention from the Irish bishops than the ‘‘agonising problem’’ of sexual abuse, Archbishop Sean Brady of Armagh said at yesterday’s meeting with Pope Benedict.

Brady said the abuse had been ‘‘a source of great scandal and discouragement’’ for Catholics, including the ‘‘great majority of priests and religious who continue to strive to live lives of holiness and selfless service’’....
