Operating a tax relief scheme for service charges costs the state millions of euro each year.

According to figures from the Revenue Commissioners, the cost of the tax relief scheme was €17 million in 20 05, the most recent period for which figures are available.

Relief on service charges was introduced in the Finance Act in 1995.
