Senior Care: Caring for a rapidly growing demographic

As we are living longer, society needs to adapt to the changing needs of an ageing population, writes Margaret O'Brien.

Life expectancy is increasing at a rapid rate. Medical advances, improved diet, more comfortable living conditions and better healthcare are the key drivers of longer life. According to the World Health Organisation, around one million people pass the 60-year-old threshold around the globe every month.

The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI) calculates that, by 2041, there will be 1.4 million people aged 65 and over in the Republic, representing 22 per cent of the population.
