Self-employed people who fail to pay the controversial new local property tax could face a surcharge of up to 10 per cent on their total income tax bill.

Self-employed people who fail to pay the controversial new local property tax could face a surcharge of up to 10 per cent on their total income tax bill. This means that they face significantly bigger penalties for non-compliance than PAYE workers.

The Revenue Commissioners will begin to issue letters to about 1.6 million households next week, with details of the new local property tax (LPT) and an estimate of the amount owed.
