Sector faces major changes

The newly-established Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) plans to seek a broader role for pharmacists beyond the distribution of drugs.

Brendan Hayes, chairman of the PSI, said major changes lay ahead for the pharmacy sector under the Pharmacy Act 2007, which he described as ‘‘a watershed’’ for the industry.

Hayes said that the provisions of the new legislation included maintaining and policing a much tighter regulatory environment for both pharmacies and pharmacists.
