Last Sunday’s €3.5 million ruling UMP party convention was one of the biggest political rallies in recent French history.

The official - and controversial - attendance figure stands at 78,000. Several miles of parked coaches lined the streets around the Paris exhibition centre, while their passengers filled the complex’s largest hall to support Nicolas Sarkozy, their party’s now-official candidate for this spring’s presidential election.
