Shiny cars, pretty hostesses and worried chief executives putting on brave faces were the main exhibits on the French stalls at the opening of the Paris Motor Show.

The heads of the French car giants, Peugeot, Citroen and Renault gave press conferences amid hopes that the 60 new cars unveiled during the exhibition would boost a sluggish European market.
