Salaries eat up hospital budgets

In a hospital in the midlands recently, the Health Service Exe cutive (HSE) appointed a new cardiologist.

But in order to hire two cardiac assistants to work with the new consultant, the hospital’s manager was forced to leave a nursing post vacant and make a cleaner redundant to stay within budget.

In the north-east, where managers face a potential deficit of €9.7 million this year, a leaked internal document has shown that managers are preparing to cut costs by reducing cancer services, slashing overtime and using private laboratories for tests.
