The US Institute for Highway Safety has announced its most important annual awards, the Top Safety Picks.

Over the years, the institute has pressurised manufacturers to increase protection for passengers and this year it refused to consider SUVs unless they were equipped with electronic stability control, ESP, shown in statistics to be of major help in reducing fatalities. Also, there were stricter criteria for head restraints and the ability to protect in rear impacts.
