Ryanair loses battle with EU on volcano costs

UPDATE: Ryanair must reimburse passengers for meals, transport and accommodation expenses after flight delays caused by a volcanic eruption, the European Union’s highest court said.

French trade unions have accused Ryanair of “social dumping in relation to employees, and unfair competition”.

Ryanair must reimburse passengers for meals, transport and accommodation expenses after flight delays caused by a volcanic eruption, the European Union’s highest court said in a binding ruling that applies to all airlines in the EU.

“An air carrier must provide care to passengers whose flight has been cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances such as the closure of airspace,” the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg said in a statement on today’s ruling....
