John Ryan’s parents, Breda and Paddy Ryan, opened the Ardilaun, a four-star country house hotel in Galway, on St Patrick’s Day, 1962.

The hotel’s 45th birthday yesterday coincided with the completion of a €9 million redevelopment and rebranding project. Ryan said that, throughout the project, he aimed to retain the hotel’s cosy atmosphere. Ryan has managed the hotel since 1995, having begun working there at age 12.
