As Crimeans vote today, the economic stakes are high

Today is a rest day in the war of words which has been steadily escalating between Russia, the US and the EU ever since Crimea declared its intention to hold a referendum about the region's future.

The weapons of war, thus far, are not military but the threat of economic and political sanctions.

If, as is widely assumed, a majority of Crimeans vote in favour of a union with the Russian Federation and the parliament...
