Telogen effluvium is the medical name for the excessive shedding of hair that occurs in women between one and five months after giving birth. This postpartum hair loss often comes as a shock to new mothers, but it is not an unusual occurrence.

Hair loss is only one of the consequences of hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. Other problems include headaches, mood swings, muscle cramps and skin breakouts.
