It should be possible to criticise the running of the household without pulling down the house.

Somewhere between Annascaul and Dingle the scientist on the radio intruded with good news about a new drug. It was, he told the interviewer, a real breakthrough with immense potential for humankind. Apparently within a relatively short period the new drug may come to market.

I was only half-listening, but as his words faded in and out and as Mount Brandon beckoned, a feelgood factor took over. And then, from the interviewer, a final world-weary...
