Taoiseach Enda Kenny has described it repeatedly as a ''barbaric act.

But divisions between the groups representing the women who underwent the procedure of symphysiotomy are threatening the prospects of ending an agonising search for a solution.

Two groups are recommending acceptance of the government's €34 million compensation scheme; another is urging survivors to reject it.
