When the first Rose of Tralee festival took place 50 years ago, it cost IR£750 to stage; this year’s event, which gets under way on Friday, will cost €1.4 million.

When the first Rose of Tralee festival took place 50 years ago, it cost IR£750 to stage; this year’s event, which gets under way on Friday, will cost €1.4 million.

Despite the high cost and the poor economic climate, the 2009 festival will be the biggest to date, according to Anthony O’Gara, managing director of the Rose of Tralee Festival.
