Once Lexus had introduced an eight-speed automatic transmission on the new LS460, it was only a matter of time until the German luxury carmakers followed.

Now news is leaking out that BMW will join the club in 2009, when a gearbox being developed by ZF, will be fitted to the replacement for the current 7 Series model.

Other luxury car makers are likely to follow Lexus.
