Bow Wow Wow’s pop hit I Want Candy and music by Siouxsie and the Banshees, Aphex Twin, the Cure and New Order are not the kinds oft racks you would expect to find in the soundtrack of an historical biopic.

This is, nevertheless, the sonic backdrop to a hefty chunk of director Sofia Coppola’s third feature about the controversial Marie Antoinette, Queen of France at the time of the French Revolution.
