Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Blade Runner) was due to direct this story of star-crossed lovers in 1977, but put it off in favour of directing Alien. Judging by Tristan & Isolde’s dreadful opening weekend in the US in January, pulling in a paltry $7m in box office takings (Son of Mask did better), it was a wise choice.
