The last Batman film to focus on the cloaked avenger's dark, psychological side rather than on campness and men dressed in crazy colourful costumes was Tim Burton's Batman (1989).

Director Christopher Nolan (Insomnia, Memento) was very keen to make this film – the seventh cinematic adaptation of the DC comic book hero – as realistic as possible.
