Stamp duty adds €107,000 to the cost of a mortgage for a couple trading up to a new home and increases the term of their mortgage by seven years, according to research to be published tomorrow.

The research, by mortgage broker IFG Mortgages, found that a typical couple trading up to a second home paid €30,000 in stamp duty.
