Refugee applications fell by a third in 2011

Asylum applications are now back at levels last seen in the mid-1990s.

The number of applications for refugee status in 2011 was down by a third.

The 11th annual report of the Refugee Applications Commissioner said that 1,290 people applied for refugee status last year, a 33.5 per cent reduction on 2010. Asylum applications are now back at levels last seen in the mid-1990s.

The top five countries of origin were Nigeria (14.1 per cent), Pakistan (13.6 per cent), China (11 per cent), Democratic Republic of Congo (5.4 per cent) and Afghanistan (5.2 per cent).
