A thirteen-time Grammy winner who played saxophone for the likes of James Taylor, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan, Michael Brecker had long been established as one of the foremost jazz musicians on the planet when, in January 2005, he was stricken by myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood disorder.

Following a vain search for a matching stem cell donor, he died of leukaemia a month ago in New York.
