Back in 1993, an up-and-coming American hip-hop outfit on the west coast released their debut album of what we might call stoner rap. Almost all the songs were about marijuana consumption and its various side-effects, and this went down just fine with critics who were jaded from several years of puerile gangsta fantasies from the likes of NWA and Ice Cube. It sold a couple of million copies and launched them as bona fide rap superstars.
