Is so-called '4K' television technology a breakthrough? Introduced by Sony and Samsung at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week, from a technology perspective it was probably the standout element of the show.

But after the TV industry's less-than-thorough record with getting us to watch 3D on televisions, is 4K another false dawn?
