Of the various figures reported from Eircom's financial results last Friday, one got relatively little attention.

That is the number of landlines Eircom now operates.

It is still tumbling. According to its own figures, Eircom's public switched telephone network (PSTN) customer base fell by almost 100,000 landlines - from just over 1,070,000 to 979,000 - in the last year. That's a 9 per cent fall, almost exactly the same as the company's €14 million fall...
