Mellow and chiming, O’Donnell Abu´ rang out on medium wave for the last time last Monday.

Brendan Balfe, who presented Medium Wave Goodbye, said it was originally an English marching tune, but the word on the web is that it was composed by Carrick-on-Suir man Joseph Haliday, bandmaster of the Cavan Militia. Who knows?

Balfe’s archive hunt went right back to 1926, to the voice of President Douglas Hyde opening the station...
