Anyone who has visited the north-east of England has almost certainly glimpsed the work of Antony Gormley, the sculptor whose most famous piece – The Angel of the North – towers over the town of Gateshead like a colossal, steel-winged bastardisation of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer (and once had a giant number 9 jersey draped over it by Newcastle United fans at a cost of £1,000).
