Radio chiefs warn of legal move over ban on political ads

Broadcasters maintain that online advertising is making a mockery of the present rules

The commercial radio industry is losing more than €1 million in potential revenue in election years because it’s not allowed to run political advertising.

That’s the claim made by Willie O’Reilly, chairman of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland group. The IBI last week threatened legal action unless the government moves to amend the current ban on political ads on TV and radio.
