Energy minister Pat Rabbitte has announced the opening of the new REFIT 2 support programme in a bid to encourage investment in wind energy.

The minister told the spring conference of the Irish Wind Energy Association in Dublin this morning that the new scheme will help bring Ireland to its renewable electricity target of 40 per cent by 2020.

In 2005, 5 per cent of Ireland’s electricity was renewable and that has risen to 18 per cent today.
