The Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, has indicated that he may cut state capitation to VECs and community schools to align their payments with denominational secondary schools in the budget.

In a move that will meet strong resistance, Quinn signalled that he may ''equalise'' VECs, now called Education and Training Boards (ETBs), and community school capitation with the lower payments received by secondary schools.
