As an economic indicator, pub sales have always been a rough but broadly accurate measure. During the boom years, pub sales rose steadily, peaking at about 40 transactions in Dublin in 2006.

That year, the Foxhunter in Lucan, west Dublin, sold for €17 million, while McGowans of Churchtown went for €16 million.

Many other premises changed hands for record prices as publicans sought to cash in on strong consumer spending, and property developers eyed up pub sites...
