Providence Resources has agreed a budget with its partners to advance preparations for an appraisal well at its Spanish Point gas prospect.

The prospect lies in 400 metres of water in the Porcupine Basin, 200 kilometres off the west coast. Spanish Point was first drilled in 1981 by Philips Petroleum and its partner Atlantic Resources, Providence's predecessor. The 1981 well penetrated four Jurassic-aged reservoir sandstone intervals with the uppermost interval flowing 925 bopd and 4.9m cubic of gas when tested.
