Proposal to streamline beef processing overruled by ECJ

The Competition Authority has welcomed a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that found proposals to streamline the Irish beef processing industry breached European competition law.

The Competition Authority has welcomed a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that found proposals to streamline the Irish beef processing industry breached European competition law.

In 1998, a study carried out on behalf of the government and the beef industry found substantial overcapacity in the sector. It proposed that the number of processors be cut to between four and six, and that the remaining processors should compensate those who closed their plants.
