Private hospital operators have urged the government to use existing capacity in the private sector before proceeding with the second phase of the national project for radiation oncology. It said the move would avoid duplication of existing resources.

Catherine Whelan, director of the Independent Hospitals Association of Ireland (IHAI), which represents 20 hospitals, said the independent hospital sector had already invested significantly in the development of the type of infrastructure that the state's plan proposed creating.
