Investors who piled into gold when the global financial crisis hit are continuing to enjoy sizeable gains, as the price of the commodity hit new record highs for three days in a row last week.

Buyers of gold have seen the value of their investment go up by 72 per cent in the three years since the crisis began, and by 32 per cent in the last 12 months alone.
