Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness’s announcement that she will seek a nomination for the presidency has heaped pressure on former taoiseach John Bruton to reveal his hand.

McGuinness is now the favourite, but senior party figures believe that Bruton, who has so far remained silent on his intentions, would have ‘‘the virtual unanimous support of the party’’.
