The father of President Michael D Higgins took part in an IRA raid on a mail train during the War of Independence, according to official documents.

John Higgins was a lieutenant in the North Cork Brigade of the IRA. His role in fighting for independence was mentioned by President Higgins during his historic state visit to Britain.
