Patrick Prendergast has been elected as the new provost of Trinity College Dublin, one of the most important academic posts in the country. Prendergast, who is the university’s professor of bioengineering, was elected as TCD’s 44th provost yesterday following a vote at the city centre college.

Prendergast said yesterday that he was ‘‘deeply honoured’’ to have been elected and would be the youngest provost since 1758.
