Pouring cold water on public anger

The coalition is struggling to come up with a formula to end the anger over water charges, writes Michael Brennan, Political Correspondent.

As the coalition scrambles to deal with escalating opposition to water charges, the fear is growing in government that the issue will become the sort of millstone around the coalition’s neck that the Universal Social Charge (USC) became for Fianna Fáil at the last election.

“The water charge is going to do the same damage to Fine Gael and Labour as the USC did to us,” said former Fianna Fáil minister John Browne.
