Ewan MacKenna: Cricket has escaped from a long-standing social and political taboo to become just another game that we Irish can enjoy - and win.

It's comforting to bask in the warm glow of hindsight, if only because it highlights the present much more than it emphasises an often humiliating past. But at the time, it was a story so bizarre that it made it all the way into Wisden, the cricketing bible, when such back-field games were usually confined to curious onlookers who quickly got bored and wandered off about their daily stroll.
