Democracy - but not as we know it

Councillors voted against voting. It happened the evening before April Fool's Day, so it was possible that it was a hoax: unfortunately it wasn't.

Democracy is a funny old game. Just when you think it's not the worst form of government around, it completely baffles you. There were a couple of interesting examples of this last week in the small, seemingly democratic island nation just north of France called Ireland.

In one, Micheal Martin, leader of the opposition Fianna Fail party, lamented on the national airwaves about the fact that the Fine Gael-Labour coalition had such a significant majority...
