Portlaoise to lose acute cases to larger hospitals

An HSE plan to redesignate Portlaoise Hospital as a ‘model two’ hospital would see road accidents, cardiac cases and complex surgery referred to larger hospitals - although emergency services would still be maintained at the hospital.

An HSE plan to redesignate Portlaoise Hospital as a ‘model two’ hospital would see road accidents, cardiac cases and complex surgery referred to larger hospitals - although emergency services would still be maintained at the hospital.

Health minister James Reilly and his officials reassured politicians representing Laois and Offaly at a meeting last Monday that A&E services would be retained at Portlaoise.

But under the HSE plan, a redesignation is planned...
