The publication of the reports into the banking crisis and a shocking opinion poll in the Irish Times have piled pressure on the leaders of the country’s two largest political parties.

The futures of Brian Cowen and Enda Kenny are being discussed openly in their respective parties this weekend.

Neither leader enjoys widespread support and confidence in his parliamentary party; either could well be deposed before the next general election.
