Poll reveals attitudes change to sentencing
A significant number of people change their attitude to sentences handed down in serious violent crime cases when told of the detailed evidence that emerged in court, a new poll by RTE’s Prime Time reveals.
The deliberative poll shows, for the first time, a dramatic disparity in the sentences that members of the public would impose if they knew more than basic information carried in news reports on serious crime.
The special programme will be broadcast on Tuesday as part of Prime Time’s pre-election series. Entitled The Big Picture, it covers a selection of major current affairs issues. Tuesday’s broadcast is the first of two programmes dealing with crime....
