Fact one: between May of next year and May 2007, the 1.1 million SSIA accounts will mature. Fact two: many Irish people have no pensions, or inadequate pension coverage, which will leave them with a low level of income when they retire.

It's little surprise, then, that there has been much debate about how to use the €15 billion in the SSIAs - or the saving habit they have built up - to boost pensions.
