Brian Friel, one of Ireland’s best-known playwrights, has died at the age of 86

Brian Friel, one of Ireland’s best-known playwrights, has died at the age of 86.

Friel, whose plays include Philadelphia, Here I Come and Dancing at Lughnasa, was born in Omagh, County Tyrone in 1929. He attended St. Columb’s College in Derry, also the alma mater of poet Seamus Heaney and politician John Hume.

Friel wrote 30 plays over the course of a six-decade career and won many awards, including several Tony awards.
